What is sadaqah?

Sadaqah is one of the best deeds that a person can do. It has many benefits, both in this life and the next. Allah (SWT) says: “And spend something [in charity] out of the money which We have provided for you before death comes to one of you and he says, “O my Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so that I could give charity and be among the righteous.” But Allah will not delay a soul when its time has come. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” (Al-Qur’an 62:10)

Meaning of Sadaqah

Sadaqah literally means “truth” or “righteousness.” In Islam, it has come to mean voluntary charity given for the love of Allah. It is different from Zakat, which is a compulsory charity and is due on certain assets.

Types of Sadaqah:

There are many types of sadaqah that a person can give. Some of them are:

-Giving food to the hungry

– Giving clothes to those who are needy

– Visiting the sick

– Helping the orphans and widows

– Helping those in debt

– Giving charity to the poor and needy

– Sadaqah purifies the heart

– Sadaqah increases our iman (faith)

Benefits of Sadaqah

Sadaqah purifies the heart: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Reported by al-Tabaraani, al-Musnad, no. 1479; see also Saheeh al-Jaami’, 5097).

Sadaqah increases our iman (faith): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If a person gives charity from his wealth, it will increase in size for him like a seed that grows seven spikes; each spike is bigger than the one before it.” (Reported by Ibn Maajah, 23)

Sadaqah for illness

Sadaqah can also be given for the purpose of seeking cure from an illness. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If a person is afflicted with a hardship, let him increase his charity.” (Reported by Abu Dawood, 1645; see also Saheeh al-Jaami
