Our mission: To improve the lives of individuals and families affected by the war in Yemen through a range of sustainable projects, providing tangible results with a positive impact.

General Information about HRD

Our brothers and sisters in Yemen are facing challenges of war, starvation, and diseases. When you help Humanity for Relief and Development, you are helping an organization that fosters connections with local community members with the intent to empower and create long-term stability.

Our United States headquarters is at 41 Flatbush Ave., Floors 1 & 2 Brooklyn, New York, 11217 United States of America. We also have United States Staff across the country who work from home through our virtual office to support more of the community in Yemen. If you wish to contact us, you can email us at info@hrdglobal.org, call us at 929-298-4534, or at Humanity for Relief and Development PO Box #: 1709593, Brooklyn NY 11217.

We currently only work in Yemen in the most affected governorates of Sana’a (neighborhood Al Farooq), Al Hudaydah (Bait Al Faqiah city), and in the cities of Ibb and Al Bayda Governorate, Rada’a City. We are also working to open a new location to help the people in Taizz. Our work focuses primarily on food security through initiatives like Mercy Bakeries and Mercy Kitchens as well as livelihood development. We hope to expand our services to other regions of Yemen and parts of the world in the future. As we want to protect the security of our female majority staff, we cannot disclose the specific addresses of where we provide services.
We work closely with the governments and other actors in countries, the United Nations, and other aid agencies to coordinate our programs.
The Federal Tax ID is 83-0919620. Our financial records can be found here (Report on Finances). You can also view our profile on Charity Navigator (https://www.charitynavigator.org/ein/830919620).

Yes, Mercy Bakeries and Mercy Kitchens are a project developed by the nonprofit Humanity for Relief and Development. Mercy Bakery and Mercy Kitchen were HRD’s first project and are our most well-known initiatives in and outside of Yemen. Please be sure to learn about our other projects on the website such as Project Uplift (https://hrdglobal.org/project-uplift/) and Project Orphans ( https://hrdglobal.org/project-orphans/).

Donations

When you donate to HRD, 89% of your donation goes directly to helping underemployed Yemen workers, women, children, and families. The remaining amount is spent on HRD operational expenses that are critical to supporting our brother and sisters in Yemen. HRD constantly strives to reduce its overhead costs, but we do not measure financial ratios as a core accomplishment. HRD instead focuses on maintaining ethical practices in managing your donation through: demonstrating tangible results and sharing our goals, strategies, management systems, and governance processes. We invite all potential stakeholders to review our financial documents, programs, and staff profiles.

We are delighted that you want to support those affected by the ongoing conflict in Yemen. Rather than benefit one family or child, HRD programs are designed to benefit whole communities. We also recognize that many families, even those with orphans, deserve to be as self-sufficient as possible. This is why we have designed Project Uplift where your donation can provide basic needs (such as food, rent, health care, furniture, and school supplies) for one family for one year. With this support, families will be able to secure employment and obtain self-sufficiency. HRD will then select new participants for Project Uplift.

For orphans specifically, HRD focuses on whole orphanages to eliminate favoritism if only a few children received sponsorship. Our work on orphanages provides wraparound services to these children facing adversity through rehabilitation of orphanages in Yemen, provision of education, healthcare, food, and economic opportunity which are all included in more traditional orphan sponsorship programs. This way, rather than benefiting one orphan, your donation can serve a whole community of orphans.

Of course, your contribution to any of our works is appreciated. However, we prefer people donate to the overall organization as that allows us to distribute funds for projects where they are needed the most. When you donate to the overall HRD organization, you are giving us the flexibility to distribute funds to sustain all of our projects instead of focusing on one single project.

Zakat and Qurbani

Zakat means purification, growth and blessing in Arabic. It refers to the almsgiving pillar of Islam that requires all able Muslims to engage in charitable practice. For every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth over a certain amount–known as the nisab–he or she must pay 2.5% of that wealth as zakat to help the needy.

Yes, all our projects are about helping the poor and vulnerable which make them zakat eligible. When you donate to HRD, 89% of your donation goes directly to services that help the Yemeni people.

Meaning sacrifice, qurbani is the slaughtering of an animal following the sacrifice criteria described in the Qur’an. HRD procures local Yemeni meat to give it for a family in need to eat through the generous contributions of our donors.
